Marsha Burns transitioned from painting to photography in 1972, eventually developing intimate figure studies in her Seattle studio that treated subjects as formal elements alongside light and reflective surfaces. A pivotal 1984 trip to Berlin redirected her work toward exploring personal identity through appearance, a theme she carried through New York, Rome, Frankfurt, and rural Washington State.
