The Maggie Fischer Memorial Cross Bay Swim returns for another test of endurance across the Great South Bay. The annual event challenges swimmers to complete the 5.6-mile course from the Fire Island Lighthouse to Gilbert Park in Brightwaters, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1927. Along with drawing experienced open-water athletes, the swim honors the memory of Maggie Fischer, a Brightwaters native and accomplished swimmer for whom the event has been dedicated since its revival in 1999.
