The name "encaustics" comes from the Greek word enkaustikos, meaning "to burn in." 2,000 years ago, the Greeks used beeswax to waterproof the hulls of ships. Then they added in pigments (as referenced by Homer’s writings in 800 BC), and suddenly the utilitarian method was also decorative. In this class, we’ll learn about beeswax, damar tree resin, and how to layer this melted mixture with pigments and collage materials to create a dreamy painting with a durable, luminous surface.
